Is Tierrasanta Baptist Church affiliated with any denomination?

Yes. Tierrasanta Baptist Church is part of the Southern Baptist denomination. Tierrasanta Baptist also cooperates with churches on a local level to do work in the San Diego area. Click Here for a more detailed explanation of our beliefs along with that of the Southern Baptist Denomination

What is a Southern Baptist Church?

In 1845 a group of Baptist churches met in Augusta, Georgia and agreed to begin cooperating together to do missions work around the world. From there the denomination began and grew. Today there are over 16 million Southern Baptists and some 42,000 churches. The denomination exists so that churches can cooperate together to do missions work on a local, state, national, and international level.

What is the Southern Baptist Convention?

Many people mistakenly call the denomination the Southern Baptist Convention, but this is actually the name of the annual meeting which is held each June. It is in this meeting that each Southern Baptist church can send up to 10 messengers to conduct the business of the denomination. The messengers from the churches are not delegates so each messenger is free to vote on denominational business as they feel the Holy Spirit is leading them.

Is Tierrasanta Baptist Church an independent church or does the denomination tell them what to do?

No one, with the exception of the Lord Jesus, tells a Southern Baptist church what to do or how to conduct itself. All Southern Baptist churches are independent but choose to work together, or cooperate, to train and send out workers to spread the Gospel around the world. The churches that make up the Southern Baptist Convention lead the convention and give it direction for ministry.

Do I need to donate money when I visit?

What does it mean to be a “member” of Tierrasanta Baptist Church?

By becoming a member of a church this says that you have identified with that church and will support that church through your service and giving. In Scripture we see where believers were identified with various churches and this meant they worked in and supported that church. If you are a believer then you are already part of the Body of Church which is made up of all followers of Christ. However, it is essential for your personal growth as a believer that you join a local church. It is also essential to the growth of the church as a whole that you give of yourself and your resources to a local body of believers.

What is baptism and why or how does it apply to me?

Baptism is a command that the Lord Jesus gave to His followers. In fact this was the first thing He did at the beginning of His ministry on earth. We require this because we believe the Bible is very clear about baptism being for all believers. We see in Scripture where baptism is only for believers and not for children or infants who have yet to accept Christ as Lord and Savior. Finally, we see baptism as being symbolic and not something that is essential for one's salvation. We do believe that if a believer has not been baptized then he or she will not experience God's full measure of blessings because they have yet to follow the very first command that Jesus gave us to follow.

Why does Tierrasanta Baptist baptize by immersion or by placing someone completely under the water?

There are several reasons why we do this:

  • Every baptism in Scripture including Jesus' baptism was by immersion.
  • It best symbolizes Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection.
  • It best symbolizes our death, burial, and resurrection from our fallen state to life in Christ.
  • The Greek word for baptize means “to immerse or dip under water.”

We are only in the area for a short time, should we still join?

Yes. There are many college students and military families in the area as well as people who have transferred in temporarily through their job who need a church home while they are in the San Diego area. We have found that individuals or families who are here for only a short time and still join are much more involved than those who don’t join. This also helps them to more easily find and get involved in a church at their next career stop or job assignment.

If I am not a member can I still attend?

Yes. You can participate in many aspects of the body life of the church, but you will not be allowed to be in leadership or to participate in the church business sessions. Incidentally, we have found that those who are not members are less likely to be fully involved in the church and do not grow as fast spiritually as those who become members. However, everyone who wants to attend our church is welcome and encouraged to come.

Matt Sparks -- Pastor's Page

The late newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst invested a fortune in collecting art treasures from around the world. On one occasion, Mr. Hearst found a description of some valuable items that he determined he had to have so he sent his agent out to find them. After months of searching, the agent reported that he had finally found the treasures that he was looking for. When William Randolph Hearst asked the agent where the treasures were he was surprised to hear him report that they were in his very own warehouse. Hearst had spent a great deal of time and money in hopes that he would find something that he already owned! Had he read the catalogue of his collection, he would have saved himself a great deal of money and trouble.
